55 x 41cm, Edition of 295, Giclée print

Rural heartland America comes alive in this 2019 work featuring vintage machinery against open Midwestern skies. Wilton Iowa Farmyard, a print from Dylan’s The Beaten Path series, connects to American Regionalist traditions whilst celebrating the agricultural heritage that Dylan recognises as fundamental to authentic national identity.
Shaped by Dylan’s bold colour contrasts and loose, expressive brushstrokes, this work’s weathered car and towering windmill create dialogue between human industry and natural environment. Dylan captures both permanence and decay, reflecting the complex relationship between progress and tradition in agricultural communities. The composition, which Dylan revisited repeatedly throughout his The Beaten Path series, echoes Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton's celebration of rural life, yet maintains Dylan's distinctive perspective as a travelling observer.
Rather than idealising farm life, the work focuses on creating a composition full of contrasts, resulting in a more honest documentation of rural community life - an honesty that is sustained throughout Dylan’s work. The bright sky and rustic elements demonstrate his commitment to finding beauty in ordinary scenes that form the backdrop of American experiences across the country. He transforms everyday farmyard elements into a story about the enduring significance of rural landscapes in shaping national character, positioning agricultural life as worthy of the same artistic attention typically reserved for urban subjects.
