Meaning & Analysis
Carte d'Invasion De Sao Paulo, previously named Invasion Sao Paulo, is a signed screen print in colours made by the renowned French street artist Invader. Produced in 2011, the print comes in an edition size of 100 and shows a map of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Earthy colours dominate the composition and the map’s outline is rendered in red against a carci green backdrop.
This print can be seen alongside various other prints of maps produced by Invader. The artist produced these maps to accompany his impressive installation project, the Space Invaders project, which Invader started in 1998. For this ground-breaking artistic endeavour, Invader travelled to bustling cities all over the world to install mosaic aliens onto the walls of the cities he visited. The aliens were inspired by characters from the popular arcade game, Space Invaders. Invader calls these trips ‘invasions’ and the artist has ‘invaded’ over 30 countries.
Carte d'Invasion De Sao Paulo details where the alien mosaics Invader installed all over Sao Paulo can be found. Discussing how he chooses where to place these installations, Invader explains: ‘it is a very subjective decision. I need to identify the neuralgic points of the cities I visit. It takes a lot of time as it is a long scouting process.’ The artist has also called this creative process ‘urban acupuncture.’
