Biography

Born in Los Angeles in 1958, Kenny Scharf exhibited an early affinity for drawing, often taking inspiration from the animated television shows that became a staple of his childhood. This early passion for cartoon aesthetics would later become a defining element of his visual language. Scharf's academic journey in art began at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where he received his B.F.A. in 1981. It was here, within the pulse of the East Village art scene, that he would forge his path and make enduring connections with artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring.

Scharf's development is marked by his commitment to integrating pop culture into his work. During the early 1980s, he became known for his involvement in the dynamic New York street art movement, often painting impromptu murals and participating in underground exhibitions. His work from this period is characterised by an amalgamation of graffiti and Pop Art, filled with animated characters that seem to leap from the canvas and embody the era's subversive spirit.

Throughout his career, Scharf has continued to evolve, exploring a variety of mediums including painting, sculpture, and performance art.

Kenny Scharf's contributions have been celebrated in major exhibitions worldwide, including solo shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Miami Center for the Fine Arts. His work has also been included in prominent public collections, such as the Guggenheim Museum and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
