Serpentine is signed screen print by Bridget Riley, released in 1999 in an edition of 200. Composed of horizontal stripes, in six different colours, with a coloured stripe repeating intermittently so that it is double in width at alternating intervals. Riley utilises black and white stripe works in order to create pause and accentuate the accent of the adjacent hues.
Despite being the result of meticulous planning, Riley’s striped works are full of movement as the colours merge and separate. The sensations induced by Riley’s optically challenging fields of lines are energetic, whilst the sequencing of colours is methodical and disordered in equal measure.
