Biography

Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1928, Al Held studied at New York’s Art Students League before visiting Paris in the 1950s. Upon his return, Held became a prominent figure in the New York art scene, known for his large-scale Hard Edge paintings with areas of flat colour that challenged conventional representations of space and form.

Throughout his five-decade career, Held continuously evolved his approach to abstraction, navigating spatial dynamics through a combination of hard-edged shapes and spontaneous gestural elements. His work, though not confined to associations with a single movement, played a significant role in shaping the trajectory of Post-War American abstraction.

Held's commitment to pushing the boundaries of abstract painting earned him widespread recognition, with his works featured in major exhibitions at prestigious institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Held's artistic journey was marked by an evolving approach to abstraction. In the 1960s, he gained recognition for his large-scale paintings featuring bold, flat colours and precise geometric shapes, as exemplified in his iconic 1964 painting, titled The Big N. These works challenged traditional notions of space and form, establishing Held as a pioneer of the Hard-Edge movement.

Printmaking exemplifies Held's fascination with geometric abstraction and spatial dynamics, as seen in his 1983 etching, Stone Ridge 1. This print showcases Held's signature style of overlapping geometric forms, where circles, rectangles, and triangles float and intersect in a vast, undefined space. The printmaking medium allows Held to explore depth and dimensionality with precision. The sharp lines and contrasts in Stone Ridge 1 accentuate a sense of movement and tension, reinforcing Held's exploration of complex potential of the picture plane.

As his career progressed, Held continued to explore new means of abstraction, incorporating elements of spontaneity and gesture into his meticulously constructed compositions. His later works, such as his Watercolours produced in the late 1990s and early 2000s, showcased a more fluid and expressive approach, while still maintaining the spatial complexity that defined his oeuvre. The watercolours are imbued with a delicate luminosity, almost glowing as though illuminated from within.

Held's contributions to the art world have been celebrated through numerous exhibitions and accolades. At just 22, he became the youngest artist to be exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art. His works are held in the collections of major museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate, and the Guggenheim.
