Alex Katz forged his path into the contemporary art scene by refusing to conform to artistic trends. Katz's distinctive style marries the vivid, bright visuals of the developing Pop Art movement with a pared-back simplicity. The bold colours, two-dimensional compositions and scarce detail of his works make them a precursor to Pop Art, whilst also creating a real sense of intimacy. Undoubtedly, his most recognisable and well-loved works are his portraits, particularly of his wife Ada, whom he painted in over 250 works. With his career spanning over seven decades, Katz has established his position in the art world through his deeply intimate yet revolutionary works.
