Biography

Born in 1929 in Saumur, France, Brasilier was immersed in art from an early age, with both parents being painters themselves. Demonstrating a natural affinity for the arts, he was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris at the age of 20. His education was crowned with the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1953, which granted him a residency at the Villa Medici in Rome, a pivotal moment that would shape his entire outlook.

Throughout his career, Brasilier has been known for his unique style that eschews the confines of art movements. Instead, he has developed a personal aesthetic characterised by a soft, yet vibrant colour palette and fluid, dreamlike compositions. His subjects often include serene landscapes, equestrian scenes, and intimate portraits, all imbued with an ethereal quality that transcends the mundane.

Following his residency at the Villa Medici, he embraced a unique aesthetic that blended his classical training with contemporary influences, resulting in a visual language that feels both timeless and modern. Brasilier's work is known for its lyrical compositions that capture a serene beauty, often reflecting the landscapes and experiences that have inspired him throughout his life.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Brasilier's career reached new heights with numerous exhibitions across Europe and the United States, which solidified his international reputation. His expressive use of colour and form, particularly in his equestrian scenes, set him apart from his contemporaries.

His work, rich in emotional depth, explores themes of harmony, nature, and the passage of time, often conveyed through simplified forms and a delicate, yet vibrant palette. His lithographs, produced in collaboration with the famed Mourlot Studios, further expanded his artistic range, bringing his distinctive themes to new audiences.
