Flowers (black and white) (F. & S. II.109) is a signed print by Andy Warhol, published by Castelli Graphics in 1974 in an edition of 100. Screenprinted in black on white paper, it shows a large rounded vase holding broad open blossoms, with thin branches carrying small buds crossing high above. It belongs to the Flowers (hand-coloured) series.
In Flowers (black and white) (F. & S. II.109), a wide, rounded vase fills the lower half of the sheet and runs off its lower edge, its curved side drawn in a single sweeping line. Dense black hatching marks the shadowed rim and the darker leaves gathered at its mouth. Large, loosely outlined blossoms with ruffled petals spread out to the left, left almost entirely white. Above them, slender branches cross at sharp angles towards the top of the sheet, carrying small buds and flowers, one of them hanging down at the upper left. Warhol’s signature sits at the lower right.
The Flowers (hand-coloured) series pairs this black and white set with a version of the same ten images to which Warhol added watercolour. To make the images, Warhol traced floral pictures from wallpaper samples and a flower-arranging book using a projector, and kept the hand-drawn line rather than his usual photographic method. Of the ten sheets, II.109 is one of the fullest compositions. The vase is cropped so tightly that the arrangement seems to press against the edges of the paper.
