My Shoe Is Your Shoe is a 1955 print by Andy Warhol from the La Recherche du Shoe Perdu series, depicting a pale blue women's pump ornamented with four small green bows. Below the image, "My shoe is your shoe." is written in cursive script. Produced during Warhol's commercial illustration years, the work is from an edition of 100.
My Shoe Is Your Shoe belongs to La Recherche du Shoe Perdu, a book and print series Warhol produced in 1955 in collaboration with the writer Ralph Pomeroy. The title punned on Proust's À la recherche du temps perdu. The works were made in the playful, personalised idiom that characterised Warhol's early output — small-scale, illustrative, gift-book in register, and aimed at the cultural circle he was cultivating in New York.
The image employs Warhol's blotted-line technique, developed during his commercial illustration practice: ink applied to one side of folded paper and transferred to produce a slightly irregular line that is neither mechanical nor entirely freehand. The pale blue pump is rendered with characteristic economy, the green bows its only colour accent. The handwritten caption below belongs to the same decorative register, the text functioning as title, caption, and image in one.
Works from this period rarely circulate in the secondary market. The edition of 100, produced well before Warhol's rise to prominence, predates the entire infrastructure of his later print practice. The series carries sustained scholarly interest as evidence of his pre-Pop sensibility — the commercial illustrator's sensibility that underlies everything that followed.
