Andy Warhol's Queen Beatrix Of The Netherlands Royal Edition (F. & S. II.338A) from 1985 is a signed screenprint from his Reigning Queens series, produced in an edition of 30. Depicting the Dutch monarch in a formal portrait, Warhol combines cool blue tones with vibrant orange, red and pink, transforming traditional royal imagery through his distinctive Pop Art aesthetic. The addition of diamond dust gives the composition a shimmering surface, emphasising the visual splendour associated with monarchy.
Andy Warhol's Reigning Queens series depicts four female sovereigns ruling in their own right. Beatrix ascended to the Dutch throne in 1980, making this portrait a representation of the monarch during the early years of her reign.
Drawing on official royal portraiture, Warhol presents Beatrix wearing a tiara, gemstone earrings and a brooch, retaining the recognisable symbols of her position. Her face is rendered in cool blues with contrasting coral shadows and red outlines, while bold geometric blocks of orange, pink and teal disrupt the formality of the original image.
The Royal Edition incorporates diamond dust, finely ground glass particles that create a reflective finish. Produced in an edition of 30, compared with the standard edition of 40, this variation heightens the decorative quality of Warhol's portrait. By applying the visual language of celebrity portraiture to a reigning monarch, Warhol explores the relationship between political authority, public image and fame.
