Queen Beatrix Of The Netherlands Royal Edition (F. & S. II.339A) is a signed screenprint by Andy Warhol, made in 1985 in an edition of 30. It shows Queen Beatrix in a tiara, drop earrings and sash, her face and dress printed in soft peach and silver-grey on a cream ground, traced in fine red line. It belongs to the Reigning Queens series.
In Queen Beatrix Of The Netherlands Royal Edition (F. & S. II.339A), the Queen faces the viewer, her hair swept up in a full, rounded style printed in silver-grey. An ornate tiara in orange and gold sits at the crown of her head. Her face is a flat field of peach, with grey shadows falling down the left side of her face and neck, pale grey-green eyes and deep red lips. Long drop earrings hang at either side. Her grey dress is crossed by a sash edged in turquoise and red, pinned with an orange brooch at the left shoulder. Thin red lines outline her hair, features and dress, set slightly apart from the colour beneath. The cream ground is left plain.
The Reigning Queens series features four ruling queens of the time: Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Beatrix of the Netherlands, Margrethe II of Denmark and Ntombi Twala of Swaziland. Each appears in four colourways. Alongside the standard edition of 40, Warhol produced a smaller Royal Edition of 30, finished with diamond dust, which catches the light across the surface of the print. Compared with the bold colour blocks of the Elizabeth II prints, this portrait of Beatrix is quieter, built from muted, closely related tones.
