Queen Elizabeth II (F. &S.II.334) features reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. Andy Warhol produced this edition of 40 in 1985 as a part of his Reigning Queens series, which features four queens. For this image of Queen Elizabeth II, Warhol has adapted her official portrait for her 1977 Silver Jubilee into this signed screen print. As an official portrait, this image would have been featured on stamps and money, making it instantly recognizable around the world. Characteristic of his Pop art style, Warhol has flattened the image with a deep red, bright yellow, and collage-like blocks of green, pink, and blue. Warhol’s own drawing adds detail to the monarch’s jewelry, making her necklace in particular a focal point.
Produced during his most productive years, the series Reigning Queens is one of Warhol’s largest in scale. The large-format images feature four queens in addition to Queen Elizabeth II: Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Queen Margrethe of Denmark, and Queen Ntombi Twala of Swaziland. Warhol’s image of Queen Elizabeth II was acquired by the Royal Collection in 2012.
