Queen Margrethe Of Denmark Royal Edition (F. & S. II.343A) is a 1987 screenprint by Andy Warhol from the Reigning Queens series, depicting the Danish monarch in a pure profile view against a vivid teal ground. Wearing a crown and red jacket with an elaborate pearl-drop necklace, the composition is among the most graphically distinctive in the series. The work is from a signed edition of 30.
The Reigning Queens series of 1985 depicted four ruling monarchs, with standard and Royal Edition variants produced for each subject. Queen Margrethe Of Denmark Royal Edition (F. & S. II.343A) differs markedly in composition from the Queen Elizabeth II prints: where those works present their subject frontally against geometric colour blocks, the Margrethe portrait adopts a pure profile view, the face in white relief against a teal ground.
The profile format evokes medal portraiture and royal coinage, a deliberate formal choice that places the image within a tradition of sovereign representation distinct from the direct gaze of the Elizabeth II prints. The dark navy hair rendered in pink and gold outline, the crown in orange and coral, the elaborate drop-pearl necklace worked in gold and white — all receive Warhol's characteristic treatment, formal regalia resolved into flat colour and graphic line. A royal insignia appears at lower right, its jewelled and enamel detail condensed to the same flat graphic shorthand.
The Royal Edition designation indicates the more restricted variant of the series. With a signed edition of 30, Queen Margrethe Of Denmark Royal Edition is among the rarest prints from Warhol's later years and is less frequently encountered in the market than the Elizabeth II works from the same series.
