Backstage Dressing Room

Backstage Dressing Room is a compelling view into the liminal space between Bob Dylan the private person and Bob Dylan the public persona - a tension he has navigated since his 1966 motorcycle accident led to a partial retreat from public life. The artwork features a dressing table adorned with theatrical items, rendered in warm reds and oranges that establish a welcoming atmosphere. Despite being devoid of people, this intimate backstage scene hints at the preparatory rituals behind Dylan's legendary performances, encouraging the viewer to piece together the stories based on visual clues.

The colour palette, lighting, and thick outlines reference Dylan’s connection to vaudeville and medicine show traditions, which had an influence on both sides of Dylan’s work. By depicting this moment, often hidden from public view, the work invites viewers to engage with the performance of art, similar to the performance of music. When Dylan becomes the artist, as he did in 2008, he must assume a persona and a viewpoint, just as he does when he plays music on stage to thousands. Created during the same period as his 2010 Brazil Series, the piece is one artefact in Dylan's career-long exploration of personal settings and landscapes.
