46 x 62cm, Edition of 295, Giclée print

Created as part of Dylan's acclaimed Drawn Blank series, Fisherman is a signed screenprint depicting a solitary figure on a wooden platform, looking out across a moody landscape. Based on sketches Dylan made whilst touring America, Europe, and Asia between 1989 and 1992, this work reflects his narrative style and captures the transient moments encountered during his extensive travels.
In Fisherman, Dylan employs bold colour and expressive brushwork to convey profound introspection through a seemingly simple scene. The central figure gazes across a stylised landscape that juxtaposes architectural and natural forms, embodying the fleeting emotions Dylan captured during his journeys. Originally sketched to “relax and refocus a restless mind” whilst touring, the work was later reimagined as paintings and prints from 2008 onwards using watercolour and gouache. Dylan's style draws on Expressionism, where colour serves both emotive and symbolic purposes and detail is secondary to atmosphere and feeling - in this case, the style seems to highlight life's transience. The solitary fisherman, who has briefly stopped to admire the view, becomes a motif for the chance encounters and observations that Dylan documented during his travels, while living out of a suitcase. This piece stands as testament to Dylan's ability to transform mundane moments into compelling visual narratives, bridging his musical storytelling with visual art whilst exploring themes of solitude and human connection.
