Meaning & Analysis
Capturing iconic American infrastructure from a dramatic perspective, Dylan's 2017 Under The Bridge, a signed giclée print from an edition of 295, transforms the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge into a depiction of intimate human experience. This print, set in the daytime, is one of two reworkings of the same scene in Dylan’s The Beaten Path collection.
Under The Bridge, at first glance, depicts the monumental architecture of the Golden Gate Bridge, cutting a rhythmic grid across a blue sky; on closer inspection, a solitary figure beneath the bridge adds a sense of scale and story, grounding the scene in the experience of those who live around it. Dylan's perspective transforms the bridge from mere infrastructure into a powerful metaphor representing connection and the conquering of natural obstacles through human determination. The timing of this artwork's creation in 2017 places it within Dylan's mature period, demonstrating his continued engagement with the roads, bridges, railways, and architecture that conjure such a distinctive American aesthetic.
His approach to documenting such feats of engineering and infrastructure reflects his philosophy of dealing with “what is externally visible,” presenting these monumental structures as encountered by ordinary travellers rather than as architectural studies. The work uses Dylan's characteristic technique of unmixed colours that allow each hue to exist independently, creating bold contrasts whilst maintaining the slightly blurred outlines that suggest the imperfections of memory. Within The Beaten Path series, the piece exemplifies Dylan's exploration of transitional spaces and his ability to discover profound meaning in America's most functional landscapes.
