Jamie McHale 1 is a 2008 digital print by David Hockney, signed and issued in an edition of 20. It is a portrait drawn from a sitter named in the title and belongs to the large group of portraits of friends, family and studio associates that Hockney made throughout his career.
Portraiture was a constant in Hockney’s work since the 1960s, from the double portraits of the 1970s to the sequences of sitters he drew and painted in Los Angeles and Bridlington. This work reflects that habit of drawing people he knows, in a direct and unforced manner. The numbering in the title suggests that the sitter was drawn more than once, which fits Hockney’s practice of making repeated studies of one person in a single sitting to see how the pose and expression change. The date of 2008 places the work at a point of transition in his output, shortly before the iPad drawings of 2009 and 2010 brought a new technology into his drawing practice.
