Meaning & Analysis
Three Black Flowers is a 1986 print by David Hockney. This artwork, created using an office colour copy machine on Arches 120 gram rag paper, depicts three stylised black flowers in a patterned vase
This Xerox photocopier print features three abstract black flowers set against a textured background, with a vase adorned in a detailed leaf pattern. Hockney's use of an office colour copy machine to produce this piece highlights his innovative approach to printmaking, pushing the boundaries of traditional techniques. The monochromatic palette and bold, graphic lines create a striking visual contrast, emphasising the simplicity and elegance of the floral forms.
This work is part of Hockney's broader exploration of floral themes, seen in other series such as 20 Flowers And Some Bigger Pictures. The use of everyday technology in creating fine art reflects Hockney's fascination with merging art and modernity, making Three Black Flowers a notable example of his inventive and forward-thinking practice. This piece not only captures the essence of Hockney's artistic journey but also stands as a testament to his continual experimentation and adaptation of new mediums.
