Shadows have long interested Hockney, who has drawn and painted them since the swimming pool pictures of the 1960s and wrote about them in his discussions of how artists record light. Here the shadows organise the whole composition, laying bands of darker colour across the ground and giving the summer scene its structure. The grid of panels recalls Hockney’s multi-part works, such as the photographic joiners begun in 1982 and the large multi-canvas landscapes of the 2000s, in which a scene is built up from separate parts viewed together. Applying that device to an iPad drawing allows the artist to work across a larger surface than a single screen.
