Untitled No. 102 is a 2009 digital print by David Hockney, an iPad drawing signed and issued in an edition of 25. It shows yellow tulips in a blue glass vase, drawn in bold, loose strokes on a teal ground above a deep red table.
Five yellow tulip heads, with a few loose petals to the right, rise on long green stems from a vase drawn in blue outline, with white marks suggesting light on the glass. The ground is a flat teal, a dark red table is scribbled across the lower edge in dense crossing strokes. The drawing is simple and direct, built from a small number of colours with no attempt at blending. The stroke of the finger or stylus is visible throughout. This directness is characteristic of Hockney’s earliest work on a touchscreen, where the available tools were limited and the marks have a graphic quality close to his gestural brush drawings. Flowers in a vase were among his first subjects in the medium, he was known to send drawings of this kind to friends by email. The work sits at the beginning of a body of digital drawing that he continued for more than a decade.
