Untitled No. 1072 is a 2011 digital print by David Hockney, an iPad drawing signed and issued in an edition of 25. It shows a sunset over water seen past a railing and a lamp post, with pink clouds across a blue sky.
A yellow sun with a ring of radiating strokes hangs low over a band of turquoise water, heavy pink clouds spread across the sky above. In the foreground a black iron fence curves around a green lawn and a small bed of flowers, with a three-headed lamp standard rising behind it. At the left a brick pier and a pale column frame the view. The palette is strongly saturated, with the pinks and blues pushed beyond naturalistic colour. The fence’s thin verticals are drawn quickly against softer, blurred masses of cloud and water. The viewpoint, from behind a rail looking out, is a familiar one in Hockney’s later work, which often treats a window or terrace as a frame. The iPad suits the subject because the glowing colour of the screen mimics the light of the sunset. The drawing belongs to the same year as the East Yorkshire landscape series, although it shows a different kind of subject.
