Untitled No. 263 is a 2010 digital print by David Hockney, an iPad drawing signed and issued in an edition of 25. It shows a bouquet of roses and a lily in a green jar with a red band, set against a teal striped wall.
Two pink roses and a smaller red one are grouped with a pale yellow lily with red-spotted stamens, with dark leaves spread below them. The jar is drawn in horizontal strokes of green, with a salmon red base and a deeper red band. It stands on a table of orange hatched lines. Behind the flowers a teal ground is marked with vertical stripes of darker dots, which echo the texture of the leaves. The colour is intense, the complementary pairs of pink and green, and red and teal, give the image its vibrancy. The roses are painted with feathery, soft-edged marks, while the lily is drawn with firmer outline, a variation of touch that shows how Hockney adapts his handling to the subject. Flower drawings of this kind were made in large numbers in 2010, they treat the vase as a stage on which colour is tested.
