Untitled No. 357 is a 2009 digital print by David Hockney, an iPad drawing signed and issued in an edition of 25. Brown leaves and a round seed head rise from a glass vase on a windowsill, with a red roof visible through the window at the left.
The glass holds a few stems drawn in thick brown outline, one ending in a rounded brown head. Two red stripes run down the water inside the vase. The sill is a series of diagonal bands in green, grey and red that slope across the foreground. The window frame at the right is picked out in grey, white and red. Through the glass a pale blue sky meets a patch of red roof with a chimney, the lines of the roof are repeated in the red of the sill. The drawing is the loosest of this group, with some lines left as thin pencil-like marks and others filled in with solid colour. That mixture of line and fill shows Hockney testing the range of the brush tools. The picture again takes the window as its frame, a device that links this screen work to his earlier interiors and to the long tradition of the view through a window.
