Untitled No. 400 is a 2009 digital print by David Hockney, an iPad drawing signed and issued in an edition of 25. Dark green leaves and two red blooms in a purple glass vase stand in front of a window, with pale sky and a peach horizon behind.
The leaves are drawn in thick black-green strokes and the flowers in red with a few lines of white and yellow scratched across them, so that the bloom at the right seems to throw out sparks. The vase is a blend of violet and blue and sits on a brown sill, with a heavy brown window frame running down the right-hand side. Beyond the glass the sky moves from pale blue at the top to cream and a warm peach colour at the horizon. The treatment of the flowers is looser and more energetic than in the neighbouring drawings, the yellow and white scribble gives the picture a sense of movement. Hockney has described drawing on the screen as quick and immediate, and works such as this show the advantage, with colour and gesture arriving together. The picture belongs to the sequence of window still lifes that formed much of his first digital work.
