Untitled No. 471 is a 2009 digital print by David Hockney, an iPad drawing signed and issued in an edition of 25. Two flowering stems rise from dark green foliage against a sky glowing pink at the horizon, framed by a brown window edge.
The plant is drawn in deep green and black, with feathery side shoots on each stem and a small bud-like head at the top of two long stalks. Behind it the sky moves from blue at the top to a block of vivid magenta to pale yellow. A broad brown band at the right suggests the edge of a window frame. A strip of the same brown runs along the bottom as a sill. The colour planes are flat and the shapes simple, the plant reads as a silhouette against the evening light. Hockney often placed plants and flowers on a sill so that the outdoor light becomes part of the picture. As with the other 2009 works in this group, the drawing has the character of a quick daily record, made for the pleasure of looking.
