Untitled No. 522 is a 2009 digital print by David Hockney, an iPad drawing signed and issued in an edition of 25. It shows a dusk view over water, with a red-roofed building and black posts in the foreground and bands of pink and yellow cloud above.
The composition is built from horizontal bands of colour, with a purple stretch of water below a sky of pale blue, pink and lilac, lit by short strokes of yellow along the horizon. At the left a red roof and a pale wall rise into the frame, topped by a small chimney. A railing and three tall black posts stand in the foreground and give the scene its vertical accents and sense of scale. The drawing is fast and spare, the marks are visible as individual strokes rather than blended passages. This is typical of the earliest screen drawings, in which Hockney worked with a limited set of brush effects and used colour contrast to carry the image. The subject, a sunrise or sunset seen from a window or a terrace, recurs across the group and gives Hockney a chance to record the changing colour of the sky from one day to the next.
