Untitled No. 712 is a 2011 digital print by David Hockney, an iPad drawing signed and issued in an edition of 25. It shows a potted plant with magenta flowers on a windowsill, with rooftops visible through the glass behind it.
A red pot stands inside a ruffled green glass dish. The plant above it carries a cluster of deep pink flowers with yellow centres over broad green leaves. The sill is rendered in pale yellows and creams, while the window frame at the right is a deep olive grey. Through the glass, the pink-red roofs and chimneys of neighbouring buildings sit under a sky of lilac scribble, so the whole image works as a view from inside a room to the outside. The colour is saturated and the drawing economical, with the glass dish suggested by a handful of turquoise and white strokes. Window sills with flowers are one of the most consistent subjects in Hockney’s iPad drawings, he returned to the arrangement repeatedly because it combines a still life with a landscape in one frame. The drawing also shows how the screen lets him place a luminous colour, such as the pink of the petals, against a soft, almost chalky ground.
