Luncheon At The British Embassy, Tokyo, February 16th 1983 is a photo collage print by David Hockney, signed and issued in an edition of 20. Many overlapping photographs build a view of a panelled dining room, with guests seated around a table.
The photographs are laid on an olive-brown ground in a loose, irregular shape, so that the room seems to open out around the table. At the centre are two men in suits side by side, around them are other guests in conversation, with hands, glasses and a brandy balloon in the foreground. A vase of flowers stands at the table’s end, a place card is visible beside the glasses. Above, the plaster cornice, the sconces and the tall windows are pieced together from many angles. A rug at the edges is picked out in separate strips. The collage form lets Hockney show a single event as a series of looks over time, so that the viewer moves around the room as he did. He began making these photographic joiners in 1982 and developed them into one of his most recognised bodies of work. The dated, handwritten title at the foot records the occasion in his own hand.
