Meaning & Analysis
Lithograph Of Water Made Of Thick And Thin Lines And Two Light Blue Washes is a 76.5 x 65.5 cm lithograph created by David Hockney between 1978 and 1980. It depicts a swimming pool using intricate lines and subtle blue washes. This piece is part of Hockney's extensive series exploring water and pools, which he began investigating in the 1960s after moving to Los Angeles. The artwork showcases Hockney's skilled use of lithography to capture the visual properties of water.
Hockney's Lithograph Of Water Made Of Thick And Thin Lines And Two Light Blue Washes demonstrates his technical skill in lithography, a medium he extensively explored throughout the 1970s. Created using a limestone printing process, this artwork employs a precise combination of thick and thin lines to depict the rippling surface of a swimming pool. The two light blue washes, layered over the linear elements, add depth and movement, enhancing the sense of fluidity.
This lithograph is a significant part of Hockney's renowned series of swimming pool works, which capture the essence of Californian life and light. The piece illustrates Hockney's innovative approach to representing water, developed through years of observation and experimentation. His technique allows him to convey the transient qualities of light on water within the constraints of a static medium. Hockney's fascination with pools began in 1964 upon arriving in Los Angeles, resulting in over 80 pool paintings and drawings by 1988. This lithograph, created in the late 1970s, represents a mature stage in his exploration of the subject. The precise lines and subtle colour variations in this lithograph are characteristic of Hockney's distinctive approach to the complex interplay of light, movement, and reflection in water.
