The Arrival Of Spring In Woldgate, East Yorkshire In 2011 (twenty eleven) - 11 May is a 2011 digital print by David Hockney, printed from a drawing made on an iPad. A magenta-pink lane runs between tall trees in full leaf, with puddles reflecting the sky and white cow parsley along the side. The work is signed, dated and numbered from an edition of 25.
As part of a series called The Arrival of Spring in 2011, Hockney drew the same stretch of Woldgate, a lane on the Yorkshire Wolds near Bridlington, repeatedly through the first half of the year. The drawings are dated, each shows the lane on a different day, so that the series records the gradual arrival of leaves and flowers. The title of this print gives its date as 11 May, when the woods are fully green.
The composition is organised around the curve of the lane. Three tall trunks in ochre and olive rise at the left. The foliage above them is built from layered strokes in lime, emerald and yellow, with a few darker greens to give depth. The track is a vivid pink, shaded with magenta and scarlet. Two puddles in the foreground carry the reflections of trees and sky in muted brown and olive. A maroon structure stands at the right of the path, and a mass of white and cream flowers with touches of red fills the verge beneath it.
The marks of the stylus are visible throughout, in the loose scribbles of foliage and in the translucent glazes of colour. The pink holds the composition together and makes the green look more intense.
