This 2011 digital print by David Hockney, signed and issued in an edition of 10, shows the Woldgate landscape on 29 December. It belongs to the series The Arrival of Spring in 2011. As a midwinter view it sits at the opposite end of the year from the spring subjects the series is named for.
Although the series takes its name from spring, Hockney’s iPad drawings of 2011 follow the landscape through the seasons. A late December view completes the cycle by returning to winter. The scene is dominated by bare trees and cold light. The palette is correspondingly restrained against the more saturated greens of the later spring and summer drawings. The date in the title, and the suffix “No. 2”, indicate that Hockney drew the scene more than once on the same day, which is consistent with his habit of working in sequence. Hockney has spoken about the visible change of the East Yorkshire landscape through the year as a central subject of his work after returning there, these drawings give that observation a diaristic form. At an edition of 10, this print is smaller than the editions of 25 that are typical for the series, which is worth noting for collectors comparing works from the same group.
