This 2011 digital print by David Hockney is signed and issued in an edition of 25. Dated 30 April, it shows a flowering bush in a field against a clear sky. It is from The Arrival of Spring in 2011, the series Hockney made on an iPad in East Yorkshire.
A rounded mass of white blossom fills the centre of the composition, set against a bright turquoise sky and bands of green field, with a patch of yellow, probably a crop in flower, at the left edge. In the foreground, there are long strokes of green and acid yellow grass, with a scatter of small yellow flowers. The blossom is built from soft, stippled dabs of white and pale lilac. The dark green stems that radiate from the bush give it a slightly explosive shape. The colour is intense and close to unmodulated, a quality that the iPad’s backlit screen encourages and that Hockney exploited throughout the series. A late-April date places the drawing at the start of the season, when blossom precedes full leaf, it makes a natural pairing with the later May and June views in the same group. Hockney’s interest in spring as a subject runs through his East Yorkshire work and connects to his much larger painted series of the same period.
