This 2011 digital print by David Hockney is signed and issued in an edition of 10. Dated 25 March, it shows a pink track under bare trees, with daffodils in the foreground, and comes from The Arrival of Spring in 2011.
The road runs diagonally through the image and is drawn as a broad pink surface striped with bands of mauve shadow. Bare trees line it on both sides, built from layers of fine green lines. A patch of orange-red brush at the right suggests buds or early growth on a hedge. On the left bank, a clump of yellow daffodils with red centres stands in bright green grass. A tree trunk at the left carries a small yellow notice, a low red-roofed structure and a pale pedestal sit behind it. These small incidents of ordinary life fit with the diary-like character of the series. The colour in this drawing is lighter and cooler than the winter views, the fresh greens and pinks of the hedgerows signal the start of the season that gives the series its name. Late March is early in the sequence, the print can be compared with the May and June drawings in the same group.
