This 2011 digital print by David Hockney is signed and issued in an edition of 10. Dated 29 January, it shows a lane with a stone wall and gatepost under bare trees, in lime green, pink and olive. It belongs to The Arrival of Spring in 2011 series.
The earliest dated print in this group shows the landscape in deep winter, yet the colour is far from wintry. A pale track with pink margins winds away from the viewer, flanked at the left by a mass of dark green evergreen and two tall, acid-yellow trunks, and at the right by a weathered stone gatepost with a broken wall. The upper half is filled with a web of fine olive and brown branches, which stand against a pale grey sky. A pink shrub at the right and a bed of mixed leaf litter in the foreground bring warmer colour. Hockney uses the date in the title as part of the structure of the series, which begins in the depth of winter and follows the landscape through to the fullness of summer. The vivid palette runs against the idea of a dormant season and shows how he used the screen’s saturated colour to enliven the first drawings of the year.
