This 2011 digital print by David Hockney is signed and issued in an edition of 25. Dated 31 May, it shows a pink track running through a tunnel of leafy trees towards a patch of bright light. It belongs to The Arrival of Spring in 2011.
A road of magenta and crimson strokes runs from the foreground to a bright opening where the trees meet overhead. The green canopy is built from layered curved marks in several tones. To the right, cow parsley is drawn in cream and white against deep green. On the left, tall dark trunks recede into woodland. The colour of the road is far from naturalistic, and Hockney uses it to carry the eye through the picture and to set up a contrast with the greens. The scene is shaded and enclosed, the lit gap at the end gives it a theatrical quality. “No. 1” in the title suggests that more than one drawing was made of the same view on the same day. Within the series this print belongs to the late-spring group, where the foliage is full and the earlier open views have closed over.
