Untitled I is a 2004 intaglio print by Ed Ruscha from the series Blank Signs, signed and issued in an edition of 35. A cluster of blank road signs on posts stands in an open, flat landscape under a pale sky.
Ten rectangular signs, large and small, are mounted on thin posts at different heights and angles, each left empty. They are rendered as white shapes against a pale grey-cream ground, so that the signs seem to be cut out of the picture rather than drawn on it. Below them a low horizon is described by delicate line, with small marks that suggest scrub and scattered ground. The absence of text is notable for an artist whose reputation rests on the use of words and phrases as the subject of painting, drawing and print. Here the format of the road sign survives without its message, and the viewer is left with the shape of information rather than information itself. The series belongs to the early 2000s, when Ruscha was returning to the open landscapes of the American West that have been a subject throughout his career. The edition number and signature appear in the lower margin.
