Columbus, Sunset is a 2001 etching by Ed Ruscha from the series Los Francisco, San Angeles, signed and numbered from an edition of 45. Green and black lines cross at shallow angles on a pale ground, labelled with four street names.
Two diagonals, one green and one black, cross near the centre of the sheet. A horizontal band of green lines runs across it. The names Columbus, Sunset, Broadway and Holloway are set along the lines in plain capitals, in alternating green and black. The composition is looser and more dynamic than the rectilinear grids elsewhere in the series, because the lines converge at oblique angles in the manner of a map of intersecting avenues. As with the other prints in the group, the title combines street names that belong to different cities. The picture presents a place that cannot be found on any map. Ruscha has recorded the names, signs and buildings of Los Angeles since the early 1960s. This series translates that interest into a quiet, abstract language of line and type.
