Geary, Wilshire is a 2001 etching by Ed Ruscha from the series Los Francisco, San Angeles, signed and numbered from an edition of 45. Two horizontal bands of fine lines frame a creamy field, with the words Geary Blvd. above and Wilshire, printed upside down, below.
The upper band is formed of yellow, olive and black lines, and the lower of black, red and grey. Between them the ground is a warm, lightly mottled cream. The names are set in plain capital letters, the lower one inverted, so that the composition appears to be read from both ends. The result resembles a fragment of a street map or a section of a road with its markings. The empty central area gives it a quiet, almost abstract quality. Geary and Wilshire are well-known boulevards in San Francisco and Los Angeles respectively, the pairing is consistent with the series title, which merges the two cities. Ruscha has made words and place names the subject of his work since the early 1960s. In this series he reduces them to a few lines of type and a ground of subtle colour. The print is signed and dated in the lower right.
