Sunset, Pierce is a 2001 etching by Ed Ruscha from the series Los Francisco, San Angeles, signed and numbered from an edition of 45. Street names in red and black run along intersecting lines on a pale ground, in a composition that resembles a tilted street map.
Two sets of parallel lines cross at an angle, the red ones carrying the names Webster, Fillmore, Steiner and Pierce, and the black ones Sunset, Selma and Wood. Some of the lettering is inverted, so that the names read as if viewed from different directions. The ground is a faint, speckled off-white. Small stains and marks across it give it the quality of an aged document. The series title combines the names of San Francisco and Los Angeles, the street names in the series appear to come from both cities, which the title of this print reflects in pairing Sunset with Pierce. Ruscha has been associated with Los Angeles and its streets since the early 1960s, he recorded the length of Sunset Boulevard in his book Every Building on the Sunset Strip of 1966. Here the interest has shifted from the buildings to the names and the grid, which are reduced to line and lettering. The print is signed and dated in the lower right.
