Meaning & Analysis
Binary Bug (red) is a signed screen print made by the renowned French street artist Invader in 2008. The print comes in a limited edition size of 100 and depicts a red and white maze-like pattern.The print has a strong technological feel to it as it resonates with a bar code or the 8-bit visual register of arcade games. It is hard to discern exactly what is being depicted in the print, however when looked at closely it is apparent that some of Invader’s famous alien characters are lurking amongst the chaotic composition of red squares.
The alien character depicted in Binary Bug (red) is inspired by the popular arcade game, Space Invaders, which was produced by Japanese game manufacturer Taito in 1978. This game has had a strong impact on Invader’s artistic career and even inspired the artist's pseudonym itself.
As well as making prints inspired by Space Invaders, Invader launched an impressive installation project in 1998 which involved him travelling to cities all over the world to install mosaics of aliens onto the walls of the cities he visited. The on-going project has come to be recognised as one of the biggest street art stunts in art history and Invader has travelled to over 30 countries to install his mosaic aliens.
