Bull VII is a 1973 print by Roy Lichtenstein, issued as a signed edition of 26. A white bull with deep blue markings stands in profile on a strip of yellow ground, set against a background of fine red diagonal lines. The screenprint is closely connected to Lichtenstein's Bull Profile series, produced with Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles in 1973.
Bull VII revisits one of the more legible stages of Lichtenstein's bull sequence. The animal remains recognisable, its patches of blue reduced to flat shapes outlined in black and its head turned towards the viewer with a slightly downturned mouth. The red diagonal lines that fill the background echo the hatching Lichtenstein used to suggest printed tone, while the band of yellow anchors the figure to the bottom edge of the sheet.
The Bull Profile Series traces the progressive abstraction of a single animal, beginning with a densely patterned naturalistic image and ending with a near-geometric arrangement of coloured planes. Lichtenstein worked from a photograph in a cattle sales catalogue and openly referenced Picasso's lithographic bull studies of 1946 and Theo van Doesburg's studies for The Cow. He presented each stage as equally constructed, gently questioning the modernist idea that simplification brings an image closer to its essence.
