llustration For Auto Poésie: En Cavale De Bloomington is a 1992 intaglio print by Roy Lichtenstein, published in a signed edition of 80. Two straight roads recede towards the horizon side by side, one beneath a striped daytime sky with a yellow sun, the other beneath a dark blue night sky with a yellow moon. It belongs to The New Fall Of America suite.
Lichtenstein divides the sheet into two vertical panels that read as day and night. On the left, a white road with a dashed black centre line narrows towards a vanishing point across a pale cream landscape, beneath a sky of blue and white diagonal stripes. On the right, the same road cuts through black ground beneath a solid blue sky. In each panel a yellow disc ringed in black hangs above the horizon, serving as either sun or moon.
The print illustrates Allen Ginsberg's poem written on the road out of Bloomington, Indiana, one of the travel poems collected in The Fall of America. The repeated highway captures the poem's sense of continuous motion and the long stretches of American road that shaped Ginsberg's writing of the period. For Lichtenstein, the image also draws on his long interest in schematic landscape, where perspective is reduced to a few converging lines and the passage of time is shown through a simple change of colour. The 1992 book La Nouvelle Chute de l'Amérique, for which the print was made, paired ten such etchings and aquatints with Ginsberg's poems in French.
