Dollar (F. & S. II.280) is a 1982 screenprint by Andy Warhol from the Dollar Sign series. A dollar sign in teal and deep violet is printed on a lemon-yellow ground, with a pale green shadow outline and dense, scratchy hatching across its surface. The work is signed and published in an edition of 25.
Among the Dollar Sign prints, F. & S. II.280 is the most visibly worked. The symbol is built from a solid teal base over which a plum-purple layer has been printed in vertical strokes, so that the surface looks combed or scored. A pale green line follows the contour and sits slightly above and to the left of the main form, giving the sign a second, ghostly edge. The uprights extend beyond the curves at top and bottom.
The yellow ground is bright and uniform, making the teal and purple look cooler than they do on lighter or darker grounds. The result is one of the most vibrant colourways in the series, with a rough, almost woven surface that is far from the mechanical finish usually associated with screenprinting.
Warhol’s interest in the sign as a form is obvious here, its treatment as a drawn mark suggests the hand under the process. As in the other prints in the series, the dollar sign is presented without a note, a figure or a setting, so that it functions as a pure emblem.
