Queen Elizabeth II Royal Edition (F. & S.336A) features Queen Elizabeth II, sovereign of the United Kingdom, outfitted in royal regalia. In this signed screen print, Andy Warhol has reproduced the 1977 official portrait of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom which was taken for her silver jubilee. Warhol produced this image almost a decade later in 1985 on Lennox museum board. To create his royal editions of the Reigning Queens series, the Pop artist added diamond dust for additional luster. This edition of 30 is one of four images of Queen Elizabeth II produced for the series Reigning Queens.
The larger series Reigning Queens features four queens from around the world: Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Queen Margrethe of Denmark, and Queen Ntombi Twala of Swaziland. Throughout his career, Warhol was continually inspired by fame and political influence, producing images of Jackie Kennedy, Chairman Mao, and more. This interest continues in his 1985 Reigning Queens, of his largest portfolios. Warhol created each image from an official portrait, but adapted the likeness with his signature style of bold colours and flattened composition.
