Meaning & Analysis
Sex Parts is a complete set of six screenprints made in 1987. Each print presents an explicit close-up of human sexual anatomy, rendered in black and white through a high-contrast screenprint process that translates photographic source material into areas of dense black and bright white. Signed and numbered from an edition of 30 – among the most restricted print editions of Warhol's late career.
The Sex Parts series was produced from photographs taken at The Saint, a gay nightclub in New York, and remained largely unpublished during Warhol's lifetime. The black-and-white screenprint process – high contrast, tonal range compressed – gives the imagery a forensic clarity rather than prurience.
Warhol applied exactly the same visual logic here as elsewhere in his practice: the source photograph becomes a screenprint matrix, detail is both preserved and systematically simplified through the reproductive process, and the serial arrangement across six images treats sex as category rather than individual encounter. The subject is processed through the same methodology as death, celebrity, or consumer goods.
The restricted edition of 30 – significantly smaller than comparable series – reflects both the sensitivity of the subject and the intended audience. The monochrome palette is crucial: what might read as titillating in colour reads instead as clinical, documentary, rigorously anti-erotic. The absence of colour removes the warmth that might soften or aestheticise the imagery. This is sex examined – held at the same analytical distance as a skull or a soup can – rather than celebrated or condemned.
