Margaret Hockney is a 2008 digital print by David Hockney, a full-length portrait of his elder sister, Margaret, seated on a small white chair. She wears a blue zip jacket, dark trousers and olive shoes, and sits against a pale turquoise wall above a floor of red-orange hatching. The work is signed, dated and numbered from an edition of 12.
Hockney’s portraits of family, friends and sitters from his own circle form a large part of his work. The digital portraits of 2008 and 2009 are among the most direct. The sitter is shown seated with her hands clasped in her lap, in pink-framed glasses, with a short grey bob and a calm, slightly amused expression.
The picture is built from simple blocks of colour. The wall is a flat, pale turquoise, the floor is a vivid orange-red scored with long, loose diagonal strokes. Against these, the blue jacket is modelled in deeper blue lines, the trousers are drawn in layered violet and navy. The chair, with its red seat, is drawn in pale cream, so that the figure is clearly placed in the space. A faint shadow under the chair is scribbled in pink.
The drawing uses a range of marks, from the dense modelling of the face and hands to the open, almost abstract hatching of the floor. The format, with a single figure seated against a flat colour field, recalls the double portraits of the 1970s and the later paintings.
