Untitled No. 268 is a 2010 digital print by David Hockney, an iPad drawing signed and issued in an edition of 25. A bouquet of lilies and other blooms stands in a dark green jar with a red base, in front of a pale window.
A yellow lily with red markings leans out of the bouquet at the upper left, with a pink bloom, a rounded magenta flower and a dark crimson one around it. The jar is drawn in deep green with a black grid of cross-hatching, its red foot sits on a green windowsill. Behind it a white, scribbled rectangle suggests the window, framed by broad green bands that read as shutters or a frame. The picture plays dark against light, with the strongly coloured flowers silhouetted against the pale glass. The sill is rendered in layers of cross-hatched green and blue. This is a more complex composition than the plain flower studies of the same period, because it adds a view through a window and a defined architectural setting. The window is a recurring motif in Hockney’s work, the iPad drawings of this date return to it repeatedly. The print is from the second year of his digital drawing practice and belongs to the same family of flower subjects as the neighbouring works in the edition.
