The Arrival Of Spring In Woldgate, East Yorkshire In 2011 (twenty eleven) - 19 February is a 2011 digital print by David Hockney. A salmon-pink lane runs between bare trees towards a pale light, with a mossy green stone structure at the right. The work is signed, dated and numbered from an edition of 25.
This print comes from The Arrival of Spring in 2011, the same series as the 11 May view, and shows the lane at the start of the year. The dates in the titles are an important part of the project, since Hockney drew the same place week after week and let the changes in the trees and light become the subject.
In mid-February the woods are bare. Slim trunks rise at the left and branches arch overhead, drawn in green, olive and cream line with a lilac sky behind them. The track curves away into a luminous haze of pale green and white, and the road surface is a warm salmon pink, shaded with darker streaks and marked with two puddles in the foreground that reflect the light. A tall, weathered structure with an arched opening stands at the right, drawn in a woven pattern of olive and green strokes. A scattering of orange and yellow leaves lies at its base.
Compared with the lush May view, the picture is cooler and more open. The tangle of bare branches shows the drawing hand more clearly. The two prints show how the same view can change as the season advances.
