This 2011 digital print by David Hockney is signed and issued in an edition of 10. It shows a winter lane in the Woldgate area on 29 December, with bare trees on either side of a pale road. It belongs to The Arrival of Spring in 2011.
A white and pink road curves away from the viewer between banks of orange-brown bracken and dense winter hedgerow, with open green fields beyond. The trees are bare, Hockney draws the branches in fine, tangled lines of red-brown, black and grey that fill the upper half of the picture. At the left an ivy-covered trunk carries dark green leaves, the main area of fixed colour against the web of twigs. The colour of the fields and the grass is a sharp, acid green, while the road is touched with pink and mauve shadows. The drawing is among the most detailed in the group, the fine lines show how the iPad can handle a dense accumulation of marks. As with the 29 December print numbered 2, the work closes a year-long cycle that begins in winter, the pair can be read together as two studies from one day.
