The Yosemite Suite 13 is a 2010 digital print by David Hockney from The Yosemite Suite, printed from a drawing made on an iPad. A pale green rock face with a thin white waterfall rises above bare black trees, with parked cars and a handful of figures along the bottom edge. The work is signed, dated and numbered from an edition of 25.
Hockney began drawing on an iPhone in 2008 and moved to the iPad in 2009, the Yosemite Suite of 2010 is among the most ambitious bodies of work from that period. He travelled to Yosemite National Park and made drawings of the valley in the Brushes application, then had them printed as large digital editions that preserve the glow of the screen.
In this print the whole upper two thirds of the sheet is a wash of mint and sea green, through which the cliff and its tall waterfall can be made out. The waterfall is a single, slightly broken line of white, running almost the full height of the image. Trees on both sides are drawn in black and grey with loose, looping strokes. A dense scribble of dark line forms a band of undergrowth across the foreground. At the bottom, a red car and a yellow one, a grey vehicle, and a small group of standing figures in blue are drawn in a much stronger, flatter colour, which sets the human scale against the landscape.
The image carries Hockney’s long interest in landscape into a new tool. The marks of the finger and stylus remain visible. The digital medium produces transparent, layered colour that would be hard to achieve with paint.
